Fletcher Studio Wins Kirby Fitzpatrick Award
SAN FRANCISCO, CA: MAY 10, 2018
Fletcher Studio is pleased to announce that South Park has been awarded the prestigious Kirby Ward Fitzpatrick Prize (KWF Prize) by The Architectural Foundation of San Francisco. Each year a small San Francisco architectural firm is identified for design excellence in a single project. This year’s Fitzpatrick prize marks the first time the award is given to a landscape architecture firm and the first ever for a public park.
The KWF Prize recognizes Fletcher Studio’s innovative design for South Park, San Francisco’s oldest public park, which provides it with infrastructural improvements and multiple amenities including a meandering programmatic pathway, custom-designed play area and structure, stages for performance, a large open meadow, and plazas of varying scales. The new design, while maintaining its original intent as an English-inspired strolling park, considers existing trees, remaining structures, circulation patterns, access points, and social nodes.
The KWF Prize is awarded annually by the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco, in recognition of the best new building completed that year, designed by a small firm in San Francisco, and is named in honor of SF architect Kirby Ward Fitzpatrick (1935-1988). The KWF Prize is made possible by his estate in order to recognize excellence in small architectural practices. Previous awardees have included acclaimed architecture firms such as Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects Inc., Jim Jennings Architecture, LMS Architects, Jensen Architects and others.
